The Ain encourages innovation, bringing together centres of excellence, specific development networks, know-how, and the very latest technologies. Plasturgy, industrial vehicles, refrigeration and air conditioning, agribusiness, the strong sectors of the Ain benefit from a network of public and private laboratories and resource centres that encourage innovation. When a company established in the department is involved in a Centre of competitiveness and R&D project, the Ain local government supports the company with a direct subsidy.

In 2007, the Ain Inter-municipal energy and e-communication syndicate committed itself to deploying an optic fibre network called LIAin (Liaison Internet de l'Ain) with the objective of making high-speed broadband available to professionals and private individuals in all the municipalities in the department (an FTTH network: Fibre To The Home).
